a swim at the lake

Swimming isn't something we get to do all summer here. The last few have been cold and rainy, but this year we are breaking heat records. Today topped out at 95 degrees! It's been quite hot for a couple weeks now. So after the open air market this weekend my friend Madonna and I went for a swim. Had the lake to ourselves and it was awesome...

Beeman's Cabin

Beeman's Cabin built in 1959, according to the sign, is a dilapidated little cabin on Byers Lake in Denali State Park (which is South of Denali Natl. Park off the Parks Hwy.) Whoever Beeman was he picked a nice spot to homestead. He could see the crisp cool lake from his front door and had a little trail down to it, probably used most for fishing and washing of things. This was a hard life out in the wilds of Alaska but also Paradise to many. It can be hard living here now in our modern age, trust me, but choosing to be out there back in 1959 was a ton of work. Hauling and/or making everything was no small task here many, many miles from anywhere or anyone. Freedom, Peace, Quiet, Beautiful are all words that come to mind but a few more do as well: Dangerous, Wild, Cold, Bears, Snow, Firewood and all the sweat and tears that come with it...

I loved how the trail hugs the lake. Gorgeous! Just last week this lake still had some ice on it. But we have had lots of awesome weather lately, sun & warmth. Great way to spend a birthday with all 3 of my boys...

South Denali View Point

On our way to Byers Lake for a picnic and hike we stopped at the "South Denali View Point" on the George Parks Highway almost an hour North of where we live. It was beautiful day out, also my Birthday, and I got some great photos. Including this family shot, thanx to my camera timer, something we don't get many of. Love it!
